How to pray Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha – prayer time and takbirs guide

Two rakats

Both Eid prayers have two rakats with additional takbirs. The method varies by school.

Morning prayer

Check the announced Eid congregation time. Sunrise time is not the congregation’s start time.

Prayer, then khutbah

The sermon follows the prayer. There is no adhan or iqamah for Eid Salah.

What Time Is Eid Prayer?

For practical planning, Eid prayer is offered in the morning after the sun has risen sufficiently, before the midday zenith. Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta describes the start as approximately a quarter of an hour after sunrise. This is general guidance, not a guaranteed local start time.

Your mosque or Eid venue may schedule one or several congregations within the morning. Check the specific session you intend to attend, its address, and any arrival instructions. Do not assume that Eid prayer starts at Fajr, exactly at sunrise, or at the same time in every city.

Find your actual congregation time

Use the organizer’s current announcement for the exact Eid prayer time. Azanly’s city prayer times provide daily prayer references; they do not establish a mosque’s Eid schedule.

Eid al-Fitr Prayer: After Ramadan

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. If you searched for “Eid Ramadan prayer” or “prayer for Eid al-Fitr,” this is the Eid you mean. Confirm the locally announced Eid date with the community you follow.

  • Before leaving: eating an odd number of dates before the Fitr prayer is a reported practice of the Prophet.
  • Zakat al-Fitr: arrange for it to be given before the Eid prayer. If using a charity, check its deadline so distribution can happen in time.
  • At the prayer: offer two rakats behind the imam with the extra takbirs of the method being followed.
  • After the prayer: remain for the khutbah and join the community’s celebration.

There is no separate Fitr-only set of prayer movements to learn. Use one of the clearly labeled methods below for the prayer itself.

Eid al-Adha Prayer: The Eid of Sacrifice

Eid al-Adha is the Eid associated with the pilgrimage season and sacrifice. You may also see it called Eid ul-Adha, Bakra Eid, or Qurban Eid. This section concerns the community Eid prayer, not a separate Hajj ritual.

  • Before attending: confirm the community’s announced date and congregation time.
  • At the prayer: offer the same two-rakat Eid structure, with extra takbirs according to the imam’s method.
  • After the prayer: listen to the khutbah. The reported order for the day is prayer followed by sacrifice.
  • If arranging Qurbani: coordinate with your provider about the valid slaughter window where the sacrifice takes place. An advance booking or payment is different from the actual slaughter.

Sahih al-Bukhari 983 distinguishes sacrifice after the prayer from an animal slaughtered beforehand merely for food. For overseas Qurbani or places without an Eid congregation, seek guidance on the applicable timing rather than using your own local prayer time as a universal rule.

How to Pray Eid Prayer Step by Step

These instructions apply to both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Arrive with wudu, face the Qibla, and intend the Eid prayer. In congregation, follow the imam’s movements and your school’s guidance on recitation behind an imam.

The main difference from an ordinary two-rakat prayer is the additional takbirs. Choose the method you follow below; do not combine the counts from different methods.

Hanafi method

Three extra takbirs in each rakat. In the first they precede recitation; in the second they usually follow recitation.

See Hanafi steps →

Shafi‘i method

Seven extra takbirs in the first rakat and five in the second, before Quran recitation in both.

Eid Prayer Steps: Hanafi Method

  1. Begin the first rakat

Join the imam’s opening takbir and recite the opening supplication quietly. Follow three additional takbirs, raising your hands with each. Lower them after the first two and fold them after the third.

  2. Complete the first rakat

The imam recites Al-Fatihah and another surah aloud. Follow him into ruku, back to standing, and through both prostrations.

  3. Recitation and takbirs in the second rakat

Stand with the imam. After his Quran recitation, follow three extra takbirs, raising and lowering your hands each time. The next takbir is the normal takbir for going into ruku, not a fourth extra Eid takbir.

  4. Finish the prayer

Complete the bowing and prostrations. Sit for the tashahhud and concluding recitations, then end with salam after the imam. Stay for the khutbah.

Eid Prayer Steps: Shafi‘i Method

  1. Opening and seven extra takbirs

Begin with the opening takbir and opening supplication. Then follow seven additional takbirs before Quran recitation. The opening takbir is not included in this count of seven.

  2. Complete the first rakat

The imam recites Al-Fatihah and another surah. Follow the usual bowing, standing, and two prostrations.

  3. Five extra takbirs in the second rakat

Rise for the second rakat. Follow five additional takbirs before Quran recitation. The takbir used to stand up is not included in these five.

  4. Finish and listen

Complete the second rakat, sit for the concluding recitations, and finish with salam after the imam. The khutbah comes afterwards.

These are two established methods, not a complete account of every school. A different count does not by itself mean the imam made a mistake.

How Many Takbeers Are There in Eid Salah?

When comparing instructions, ask whether the number refers to extra Eid takbirs or includes the normal opening and movement takbirs.

  • Hanafi: 3 + 3 extra takbirs, giving 6 extra in total.
  • Shafi‘i: 7 + 5 extra takbirs, giving 12 extra in total.

For example, the Shafi‘i first rakat has an opening takbir plus seven additional ones. The normal takbir for bowing is separate. These counts apply to both Eids; the difference is between methods, not between Fitr and Adha.

What if my imam uses a different count?

Follow the imam rather than carrying out your own competing sequence. Hanafi guidance explicitly recognizes following an imam who uses another established takbir method.

What do I say?

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Allahu akbar — Allah is the Greatest.

These extra takbirs inside Salah are distinct from the longer Eid takbir phrases you may hear before the congregation. Do not insert a long celebration chant in place of each extra prayer takbir.

Is Eid Prayer Obligatory, Wajib or Sunnah?

The answer depends on the school and the person’s circumstances. “Mandatory for everyone” and “only optional for everyone” both overlook recognized differences.

  • Hanafi: wajib for those who meet its obligation conditions, commonly linked to the conditions for Friday prayer.
  • Shafi‘i and Maliki: an emphasized Sunnah.
  • Hanbali: commonly classified as a communal obligation (fard kifayah), fulfilled for the community when sufficient people establish it.

Ask a qualified local teacher how the conditions apply if you are traveling, ill, or otherwise unable to attend. The school classifications above are not a claim that every adult has an identical individual duty.

Can You Pray Eid Prayer at Home?

This is a school-dependent question. Do not assume that the rules for ordinary voluntary prayer automatically apply to Eid.

Shafi‘i guidance

Eid may be offered at home alone or with others. Pray two rakats with seven extra takbirs in the first and five in the second before recitation, using the method above. A sermon is not required for the validity of the prayer.

Hanafi guidance

The standard position discussed in the cited guidance does not treat an individual prayer at home as Eid Salah: communal conditions apply. Someone who misses Eid may instead pray ordinary voluntary prayer without the extra Eid takbirs. Some Hanafi scholars have allowed household arrangements under particular interpretations; seek specific advice before treating a family gathering as an Eid congregation.

Eid Prayer Questions

How many rakats are in Eid prayer?

Two rakats for both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Extra takbirs do not add extra rakats.

How long is Eid prayer?

There is no fixed duration. The two-rakat prayer, sermon, announcements, and arrangements vary by venue. Ask the organizer how much time to allow, especially if there are multiple sessions.

Is there an adhan or iqamah for Eid prayer?

No. The Eid congregation does not use an adhan or iqamah. Arrive at the announced time rather than waiting for a call to prayer.

Does the khutbah come before or after Eid prayer?

After the prayer, for both Eids. This differs from the familiar Friday sequence in which the khutbah precedes the prayer.

What if I miss the Eid congregation?

Check whether the venue has another session. If you have missed all sessions, follow your school’s guidance: the Shafi‘i and standard Hanafi approaches to praying Eid individually differ, as explained in the home-prayer section.

Do I need a special Eid dua to pray?

The prayer uses its normal Salah recitations and the extra takbirs. There is no single special Eid dua presented here as a condition for completing it. Personal supplication after prayer is distinct from the ritual steps.

Are the Fitr and Adha prayer methods different?

Their core two-rakat structure is the same. The key differences explained here concern the occasion and surrounding observances: Zakat al-Fitr and eating dates before Fitr, and the relationship between prayer and sacrifice on Adha.

New to Salah?

Review the regular prayer movements and sitting recitations before learning the additional Eid takbirs.
